The city of Avilés is well known for its industry specialized in the production of metal. No wonder that reducing the air pollution has always been their big struggle. Nowadays there is a high control to prevent it, but often the measuring stations mark that Avilés has the most polluted air of the whole Asturias. Last year, for example, the levels of benzene (this oil derivative has been proved to cause colon cancer and leukemia) were 19,82 micrograms/m3(*), four times higher than what's established by the current legislation.
The creaction participants noticed some old folks that stood out in the parks and thought they had been breathing tones of benzene and who knows what else in the last decades. In order to protect them and to catch people's attention about the air pollution once more we had an idea. We sewed some handmade colourful textile masks and hang them on our faces while walking around the city and donating most of them to local statues and monuments.* photos by tau*mh* Source: http://ecoloxista.blogsome.com/category/contaminacion/
